Pope Alexander lives! They’re back … The Borgias season three

The Borgias, season 3, opened last night on Showtime.

If you remember, season 2 ended with Pope Alexander being poisoned. The final scenes were those of the young Franciscan Friar who poisoned him falling to the floor gasping for breath with blood streaming out of his eyes. Alexander was not in much better shape.

Last night we have Alexander being brought to his room, where the doctors said there was nothing they could do for him. However, Lucretia, the pope’s daughter (and holy harlot) said she had been reading about using charcoal to cure some poisonings. And so they did, pour lots of liquefied charcoal into the dying pope through a tube into his mouth and stomach. Amazing! We still do this to this day in the emergency rooms for poisonings and overdoses. Lucretia should be given an honorary Paramedic certificate!

While all of this is going on, Cesare (the pope’s son and resigned Cardinal) goes out after Cardinal Della Rovere, who he finds out was the one who orchestrated the poisoning. The good Cardinal was already on his way to the Vatican for the Conclave, presuming Pope Alexander to be dead. When he arrives and the other Cardinals tell him the boss is still alive, he does a two-step out of the palace, but is captured by Cesare.

Meanwhile, a plot is laid to kill the pope’s family. This one was hatched by Lady Catherine Sforza. Her cousin, Cardinal Sforza, informs Cesare and the others. People are killed, mostly guards and other bystanders, but the holy father’s family is saved.

In all of this excitement, Cardinal Della Rovere manages to escape, disguised as a corpse! He gives an impish smile, presumably as he dashes off to plot another papal murder!

The final scene shows Pope Alexander saying that they were now at war! Not quite sure whether it is a war against the Sforza’s or the cardinals.

Time will tell as we progress through this season.

I don’t believe that they have Showtime at the House of Martha in the Vatican where the current successor of Peter is living, but of course, it is my sincere prayer that Pope Francis will have a more serene experience as he continues his work of reforming the Church, especially the current Roman Curia!

By the way this is NOT a show for children!

Pope’s daily Mass: Calumny destroys the work of God in people

(Vatican Radio) The destructive force of calumny was the focus of Pope Francis’ homily for Mass on Monday morning celebrated with staff from the Vatican’s telecommunications office and internet services.

The Pope drew inspiration from the daily readings, in particular the first reading that recounts the episode of Stephen, the first martyr of the Church, being dragged before the Sanhedrin because of his witness to the Gospel. Pope Francis noted that Stephen was a victim of calumny. He is accused of “false witness” but it is not a “fair fight, a fight between good men”, noted Pope Francis, because Stephen’s enemies chose the path of a dirty fight, “the path of calumny”. Calumny he continued is worse than sin – it is the direct expression of Satan.

“We are all sinners; all of us. We all commit sins. But calumny is something else. It is of course a sin, too, but it is something more. Calumny aims to destroy the work of God, and calumny comes from a very evil thing: it is born of hatred. And hate is the work of Satan. Calumny destroys the work of God in people, in their souls. Calumny uses lies to get ahead. And let us be in no doubt, eh?: Where there is calumny, there is Satan himself. ”

From the behaviour of the accusers, Pope Francis then turned his attention to the accused. Stephan, he noted, does not return falsehood with falsehood: “He does not want to go that way to save himself. He looks to the Lord and obeys the law”, being in the peace and truth of Christ. And that Pope Francis said “is what happens in the history of the Church”, because from the first martyr until today there have been numerous examples of those who have witnessed to the Gospel with great courage:

“But the age of martyrs is not yet over, even today we can say, in truth, that the Church has more martyrs now than during the first centuries. The Church has many men and women who are maligned through calumny, who are persecuted, who are killed in hatred of Jesus, in hatred of the faith: some are killed because they teach the catechism, others are killed because they wear the cross … Today, in many countries, they are maligned, they are persecuted … they are our brothers and sisters who are suffering today, in this age of the martyrs”.

And again Pope Francis repeated “The age of martyrs is not yet over, the Church has more martyrs now than during the first centuries”. This age of “such great spiritual turmoil” reminded the Pope of an ancient Russian icon that depicts Our Lady covering the people of God with her mantle:

“We pray to Our Lady to protect us, and in times of spiritual turbulence the safest place is under the mantle of Our Lady. She is the mother who takes care of the Church. And in this time of martyrs, she is the protagonist, the protagonist of protection: She is the Mother. Let us state with faith: Mother, the Church is under your protection: Care for the Church. ‘”

Meeting with US Leadership Conference of Women Religious and the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith

Vatican City, 15 April 2013 (VIS) – “Today, the Superiors of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith met with the Presidency of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) of the United States of America. Archbishop James Peter Sartain, archbishop of Seattle, Washington, USA, and the Holy See’s Delegate for the Doctrinal Assessment of the LCWR, also participated in the meeting,” informs a communique from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

“As this was his first opportunity to meet with the Presidency of the LCWR, the Prefect of the Congregation, Archbishop Gerhard Ludwig Muller, expressed his gratitude for the great contribution of women Religious to the Church in the United States as seen particularly in the many schools, hospitals, and institutions of support for the poor which have been founded and staffed by Religious over the years.”

“The Prefect then highlighted the teaching of the Second Vatican Council regarding the important mission of Religious to promote a vision of ecclesial communion founded on faith in Jesus Christ and the teachings of the Church as faithfully taught through the ages under the guidance of the Magisterium. He also emphasized that a Conference of Major Superiors, such as the LCWR, exists in order to promote common efforts among its member Institutes as well as cooperation with the local Conference of Bishops and with individual Bishops. For this reason, such Conferences are constituted by and remain under the direction of the Holy See.”

“Finally, Archbishop Muller informed the Presidency that he had recently discussed the Doctrinal Assessment with Pope Francis, who reaffirmed the findings of the Assessment and the program of reform for this Conference of Major Superiors.”

“It is the sincere desire of the Holy See,” the note concludes, “that this meeting may help to promote the integral witness of women Religious, based on a firm foundation of faith and Christian love, so as to preserve and strengthen it for the enrichment of the Church and society for generations to come.”

Pope appeals for persecuted Christians

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis asked the faithful on Sunday to pray for their brothers and sisters in Christ who are suffering persecution. “Let us pray especially for Christians who suffer persecution,” he said, adding, “ – [and] in these times, there are many Christians who suffer persecution, a great many, in many countries: let us pray for them from our heart, with love, that they might feel the living and comforting presence of the Risen Lord.”

The Pope made his appeal before more than 80 thousand people in St Peter’s Square, gathered to pray the Regina Caeli with him on the third Sunday of Easter. In his remarks ahead of the traditional Eastertide prayer, Pope Francis commented on the passage from the Acts of the Apostles read at Mass, which speaks of the first preaching of the Apostles. The Pope reiterated that the faith of the Apostles was based on such a deep and personal experience of the crucified and risen Christ, that they were not afraid of anything or anyone, not even persecution – and that their testimony is a valid teaching for all of us today.

“The Apostles,” said Pope France, “even saw their persecution as a badge of honor, that made them capable of following in the footsteps of Jesus and to be like Him, bearing witness [to Him] with their lives.”

After the Regina Caeli, the Pope recalled that on Saturday in Venice, was beatified Don Luca Passi, a nineteenth century priest from Bergamo, and founder of the Lay Work of St Dorothy and the Institute of the Sisters of St Dorothy. The Holy Father also noted that in Italy, this Sunday is the Day for the Catholic Sacro Cuore University – the University of the Sacred Heart, which has prepared and continues to prepare young people to be good citizens, and true contributors to the common good.
