The Concho Padre is Monsignor Maurice J. Voity, retired rector of the Cathedral Church of the Sacred Heart in San Angelo, Texas. Ordained on June 24, 1979 in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican at the hands of St. John Paul II, he studied and served at Rome before and after his ordination, then returned to service in the Diocese of San Angelo, Texas. He was born in Flushing, New York, and raised in Manhasset, Long Island, where he attended St. Mary’s Elementary and High Schools. Msgr. Voity served as editor of the West Texas Angelus diocesan newspaper for fourteen years, and was on the Board of Directors of the Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada. A Knight Commander of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, he holds a graduate degree in Spiritual Theology from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome – the Angelicum. Prior to studying for the priesthood, he completed several graduate programs while serving in the U.S. Air Force. His military service includes a two-year assignment in DaNang, Vietnam. He also was a broadcaster in San Angelo, Texas, and a journalist prior to being sent to Rome by the late Bishop Stephen A. Leven of San Angelo to study for the priesthood.
